PhD 2016 (Sheffield)
Ali joined the PhD programme in 2011 after completing, with distinction and an excellence award, the MSc in Environment and Energy engineering at Sheffield University in 2010. His PhD thesis looked at the very contemporary topic of electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide and steam focusing on the bi-layered electrolytes in solid oxide electrolysis cells. He worked with Dr Rachael Rothman (nee Elder) and Prof Ray Allen.
During his first year, Ali was able to receive a secondment in the Europe’s biggest carbon capture project, the CC100+ pilot capture project at Ferrybridge power station which was a great industrial learning experience. This was very helpful to him in terms of reinforcing the concepts behind the Comprehensive and Coordinated approach to Carbon Capture and Utilisation (4CU).
